All designed objects are propaganda for a certain way of life.
Sometimes we need to stop analysing the past, stop planning the future, stop figuring out precisely how we feel, stop deciding exactly what we want, and just see what happens.
We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person.

“Institutions will try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution.” — Clay Shirky
I think this observation is brilliant. It reminds me of the clarity of the Peter Principle, which says that a person in an organization will be promoted to the level of their incompetence. At which point their past achievements will prevent them from being fired, but their incompetence at this new level will prevent them from being promoted again, so they stagnate in their incompetence.
The Shirky Principle declares that complex solutions (like a company, or an industry) can become [

Tony’s post on how to change your style reminded me of a great magazine article I found awhile back ago in a 1954 issue of True Magazine for Men that I bought at an estate sale in Vermont. Entitled ”Look What Happens When You Dress As Smart as You Are,” the article highlights the style transformation of Columbia University student, Don Wardlaw.

I asked him if this sign was good for business or bad for business.
He just smiled and shrugged.

Abraham Maslow is famous for creating the “Hierarchy of Needs” — a graduating set of general requirements for human motivation. Like this:
The idea behind this pyramid is that you need to fulfill the needs in the lowest (Physiological) level of the pyramid before you start thinking about the needs in the second-lowest (Safety) level. Then you can move on to the Love / belonging needs, and so forth.
Then, hopefully, once you have satisfied the needs in the first four levels, you can start working on self-actualization, at which point you are a fully-realized human. Which would [

The Greatness of Simplicity
From Self Control, Its Kingship and Majesty by William George Jordan, 1905
No character can be simple unless it is based on truth—unless it is lived in harmony with one’s own conscience and ideals. Simplicity is the pure white light of a life lived from within. It is destroyed by any attempt to live in harmony with public opinion. Public opinion is a conscience owned by a syndicate,—where the individual is merely a stockholder. But the individual has a conscience of which he is sole proprietor. Adjusting his life to his [

To Risk
To laugh is to risk appearing the fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach out is to risk involvement, To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self. To place your ideas and dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return, To live is to risk dying, To hope is to risk despair, To try is to risk failure. But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, does [

In the early hours of Monday morning my wife had a Non ST segment elevation myocardial infarction. You might be more familiar with the term heart attack. Thankfully she is now recovering in hospital.
We didn’t call an ambulance at the time, it didn’t follow the pattern you see in films (no falling to the floor clutching left arm) and it didn’t cross my mind that this could be serious. We had organised a party the day before and I put it down to heart burn. I feel pretty damn foolish about this now.
Thing is, it didn’t occur [

Since this process is a bit complicated, we have made a quick video showing step by step how to do so.
Simply unchecking the “Allow” box is not sufficient. As Facebook explains, “if you opt out, your friends may still share public Facebook information about you to personalize their experience on these partner sites unless you block the application.” Nor can you go to [

No matter how long you know them, what you do for them or how close you are to them Scottish people you know will one day call you an ‘English Bastard’. Actor Tilda Swinton and director Luca Guadagnino share some unusual ideas on life and art, out of which come extraordinary films such as I Am Love Io sono l’amore (2009) IMDB 8.2/10, 136 votes »

Instead of just looking at the picture quality, you should also take a serious look at the brand’s 3D glasses. Some show some clear advantages to purchase that brand’s 3D TV and until there’s a standard format for 3D glasses, each brand requires its own unique glasses, thereby locking you into that manufacturer’s products. Helmets often cause rotational injuries to head and neck. A helmet, well or poorly-fitted can act like a large wrench on the head leading to a twisted (or worse) neck. This is why aerodynamic time-trial helmets are so dangerous, but it doesn’t stop rubes buying them in Condor to ride the DD. This looks interesting but does mean that the oft-repeated twist injury has its foundations in fact.

“Mining phosphorus for food fertilizer is consuming the mineral faster than geologic cycles can replenish it. Urine is a potential source of the mineral. So far, there is no indication that Bill Gates wants to monopolise world supplies of urine: this may be because it’s complicated to do so. To capture, value, and reuse urine requires a multi-dimensional transformation in how we think about and treat sewage. Technologies, regulations, business models – and especially attitudes and behaviour – all have to change.”

Big pharma claims to hold the chemical key to a vigorous female libido. It’s called Flibanserin and you pop it to get randy. Inkling writer Tania Rabesandratana investigates to find out whether it’s indeed that simple.
Serendipitous drug development makes for a good story. It makes science sound surprising while making the pharmaceutical industry look spontaneous and candid. Remember how Pfizer was originally looking for a compound against hypertension, and ended up marketing Viagra?

A decade ago most of us were using AltaVista or something similar for search. No one was really complaining very much about the huge amount of spam and other noise that cluttered the results because we didn’t know there was a better way. Then Google came along with Page Rank, and had a profound effect on the quality of Internet search. Suddenly (and it really was that sudden), we couldn’t imagine going back to AltaVista and searching pages of results for the thing that Google gave us immediately.

A new study of 19,567 Chinese subjects found that daily naps increased the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes from 13.5% (without naps) to 15.1% (with naps). In addition, there was some evidence that longer siestas raised the risk more than shorter snoozes.
According to the authors, napping in China is a social norm, which is practiced by all ages primarily as a habit started in childhood. In Western countries, napping is less common and is often unplanned and prompted by sleepiness likely caused by aging, deteriorating health status or nighttime complaints….The authors [

It’s probably not exactly a secret to Inkling’s enlightened readers, but this meticulously laid out post on the blog of the dating site OkCupid argues that more men ought to consider dating older women, because:
1) They’re better in bed.
2) They’re happier and more confident.
3) They’re “better looking than you realize.”
(As a qualified “older woman”—at 31! Sheesh—I say check, check, ouch.)
At any rate, the post, though long, is well organized and a fun read. Calculus is involved.

All of this rings true to me.
Unfortunately it was at this point – about five minutes ago – that I realised the time. I’ve spent so long catching up with everything I missed from the past week or so that six hours have passed. It’s dawn in San Francisco, a matter of minutes before my deadline, and I still haven’t written a word, let alone 1300. That’s the other annoying thing about skipping a week: it takes you another week just to catch up.
