John Cooper Clarke showed up as (usually unannounced) support at practically all the gigs I attended… you know… back then. Or at least that’s how I remember it. Everything about his ‘angry coathanger’ on-stage persona led me to believe that he’d be a pretty prickly guest on Jarvis Cocker’s Sunday show a couple of weeks ago but when it came to it he was happy and open-minded, full of praise for younger artists and obviously still learning, still working. Really inspiring. Here’s the interview:

Over 25 years since Diamond Life was issued! Where have the years gone?

Now a new ‘lounge’ bossanova album Soldier of Love ♣ from Ms Adu. Is it any good? Yes. Is it great? Probably not. Let’s wait and see but whatever and despite the rather tinny drum sound on MP3 it is a marker in time for some.

I have no doubt that people will queue up to explain stuff to me about Robert Palmer and had I considered this song or that one but this one seems a song that it was quite an achievement for a young man to write. [
