Sometimes we need to stop analysing the past, stop planning the future, stop figuring out precisely how we feel, stop deciding exactly what we want, and just see what happens.

Mountain Bikes - Who Needs 'em?

I am so glad people still say this.

That’s the take that Chris Kostman has on riding off-road. Mountain bike? No way. He just uses his road bike, and he’ll leave any mountain biker in the dust, he claims.

These two quotes will tell you where he’s coming from:

1. “[T]he mountain bike is the most over-rated, most improperly used, most over-built, and most greedily promoted piece of hardware to hit the sport and fitness industry in modern history.”

2. Can’t ride off-road without wide, knobby tires, and at least some suspension? Chris’ retort: “‘Technique beats technology any [

Al Gore Joins Richard Branson in Backing GreenRoad

What do a trucker, an Israeli entrepreneur, Al Gore and Richard Branson all have in common? Proof that the real goldmines are old, neglected industries.

The name of that proof is GreenRoad. While so many entrepreneurs bang their heads against a Web and social media advertising brick wall, GreenRoad has applied common technology to an industry technology has largely passed by and—voilà—they’ve got a business that’s growing and saving lives, money and the environment.

Driving is the third most deadly profession after deep sea fishing and working in a coal mine. Not only does driving more safely save lives [

Mapped: the UK’s road cycling blackspots — Times Labs Blog

How perilous is it to cycle where you live? Here’s a map showing Department for Transport data of all the road accidents in 2007 involving cyclists where injuries were reported to the police. There were just over 16,000 accidents in total – about 46 per day. Thanks to the raw data released by Direct Gov, we were able to learn the grid reference for each – presumably thanks to the police report. We turned these into latitude/longitude co-ordinates using a program one of our coders wrote, which we then plotted on a map.

Haute Route - per ardua ad astra

big pointy mountains alert

The Haute Route, (or The High Route or Mountaineers’ Route) is the name given to a route (with several variations) undertaken on foot or by ski touring between Chamonix, France, and Zermatt, Switzerland.

First charted as a summer mountaineering route by members of the Alpine Club (UK) in the mid 19th century, the route takes around 12+ days walking (or 7+ days skiing) running the 180 km from the Chamonix valley, home of Mont Blanc to Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn. On 2008/05/02, Lionel Bonnel [

Eric Jones – Base Jumping Off Angel Falls

“After we had kids, people would ask if I wasn’t being irresponsible for doing all these things but my take is that everything in life involves risk and it’s about weighing up those risks. When people go into climbing, they can start out with a macho attitude but you learn to be humble and realise you’re there on nature’s sufferance. You don’t conquer a mountain and if you go out there with that attitude, it will bite you back.”
