All designed objects are propaganda for a certain way of life.
Sometimes we need to stop analysing the past, stop planning the future, stop figuring out precisely how we feel, stop deciding exactly what we want, and just see what happens.
We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person.

Losing Dad: How a Man Responds to the Death of His Father

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Brian Burnham. Mr. Burnham holds a Masters of Education in Counseling from the College of William and Mary and is a Care Coordinator for Riverside Behavioral Health Center.

“His heritage to his children wasn’t words or possessions, but an unspoken treasure, the treasure of his example as a man and a father.” — Will Rogers Jr.

While growing up, our fathers, whether for good or ill, are our earliest and strongest examples of manliness. Even for those who grow up fatherless his influence is a major one, conspicuous [

The Journey is the Thing

The Journey is the Thing from Tony Blazejack on Vimeo.

Sorry to interrupt your afternoon with this tear-jerker but man, this is intense. Maybe it’s the weather here in NYC today but watching this was a really moving experience. I’m stunned. Makes you think about people who have lost their lives on a bike.

STEMI? | Get well Dr Joolz

In the early hours of Monday morning my wife had a Non ST segment elevation myocardial infarction. You might be more familiar with the term heart attack. Thankfully she is now recovering in hospital.

We didn’t call an ambulance at the time, it didn’t follow the pattern you see in films (no falling to the floor clutching left arm) and it didn’t cross my mind that this could be serious. We had organised a party the day before and I put it down to heart burn. I feel pretty damn foolish about this now.

Thing is, it didn’t occur to [

Things life has taught me ... again

No matter how long you know them, what you do for them or how close you are to them Scottish people you know will one day call you an ‘English Bastard’. It doesn’t matter what nationality you actually are and even being Scottish will not render anyone immune from this. They cannot help themselves. I was taught this all my life and have never had cause to doubt its veracity.

If you think I am talking about you, I am probably doing exactly that.

DEFCON - Wikipedia, A DEFINITION

The defense readiness condition (DEFCON) is a measure of the activation and readiness level of the United States Armed Forces. It describes progressive postures for use between the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the commanders of unified commands. DEFCONs are matched to the situations of military severity. Standard peacetime protocol is DEFCON 5, descending in increasingly severe situations. DEFCON 1 represents expectation of actual imminent attack, and is not known to have ever been declared. During the Cold War, DEFCON 1 was feared because it would most likely precede an all-out nuclear war.

it's a dog's life, for some

My mate Porridge lounges before another expedition riding-shotgun for me. As we often walk at night I thought a bike-light on his collar a good idea, but a few locals seem to think I have decorated him for Christmas. Am I robbing him of his dignity?

Thanksgiving 2009

Today is Thanksgiving day in the USA which is a bit of a mystery to the rest of the world. A tradition Americans have at Thanksgiving, that I like, is writing a list of all the things, people, places and events over the past twelve months for which one is thankful. Ninety one days ‘in’ I imagined that I would have a very short list this year and almost skipped it but nevertheless sat down to check. It should have been no surprise to me that I wrote a long and extremely heartfelt list.

Many people deserve recognition and [
