Hipsters? they are getting on some people's nerves, or so it seems

Hipster-hate blogs are multiplying online. But who are these much-maligned trendies – and why do people find them so irritating? Perhaps we should learn to love our skinny-jeaned friends instead

There was a party going on in London E5; a house party in one of the Victorian terraces that line the streets in this modest area of east London. There had been parties on the street before, only on this particular Friday evening two months ago, guests wore Ray-Bans, deep-cut v-neck T-shirts and skinny jeans. They were also, according to one partisan report, in possession of “a sound system [

Road violence against children in Britain

The extraordinary level of road violence against Britain’s children is underlined by a new report. This report will, of course, be totally ignored by the Department for Transport, politicians, the medical profession, the new ConDem petrolhead government, and the Association of Chief Police Officers, all of whom are full committed to the car supremacist status quo. By tomorrow this report will be forgotten and will recede into the mist.

One child in every class is killed or injured in a road accident by the time they are 16, new figures show.

During their childhood one in [

The Creativity Crisis – Newsweek

It’s too early to determine conclusively why U.S. creativity scores are declining. One likely culprit is the number of hours kids now spend in front of the TV and playing videogames rather than engaging in creative activities. Another is the lack of creativity development in our schools. In effect, it’s left to the luck of the draw who becomes creative: there’s no concerted effort to nurture the creativity of all children.

Losing Dad: How a Man Responds to the Death of His Father

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Brian Burnham. Mr. Burnham holds a Masters of Education in Counseling from the College of William and Mary and is a Care Coordinator for Riverside Behavioral Health Center.

“His heritage to his children wasn’t words or possessions, but an unspoken treasure, the treasure of his example as a man and a father.” — Will Rogers Jr.

While growing up, our fathers, whether for good or ill, are our earliest and strongest examples of manliness. Even for those who grow up fatherless his influence is a major one, conspicuous [

The Journey is the Thing from Tony Blazejack on Vimeo.

Sorry to interrupt your afternoon with this tear-jerker but man, this is intense. Maybe it’s the weather here in NYC today but watching this was a really moving experience. I’m stunned. Makes you think about people who have lost their lives on a bike.

Children ‘more likely to own a mobile phone than a book’ – Telegraph

Photo: IAN JONES

The study by the National Literacy Trust suggested a link between regular access to books outside school and high test scores.

Almost nine-in-10 pupils now have a mobile compared with fewer than three-quarters who have their own books in the home, it was disclosed.

The childrens menu: the death of civilization

A restaurant owner opines on the importance of the dining experience.

Mr. Marzovilla welcomes young children at his restaurant, even discounts their meals on Sunday evenings, and is not above serving a simple appetizer portion of pasta to please little ones. But he has strong opinions about food, and about the messages parents convey to their offspring through what they eat. Children’s menus aim too low, he argues — they’re a parenting crutch.

Mother’s phone call ‘can be as soothing as a hug’

The working mother who cannot be at home to cuddle a distraught child can relax – her voice on the phone soothes as much as a hug, a study suggests.

STEMI? | Get well Dr Joolz

In the early hours of Monday morning my wife had a Non ST segment elevation myocardial infarction. You might be more familiar with the term heart attack. Thankfully she is now recovering in hospital.

We didn’t call an ambulance at the time, it didn’t follow the pattern you see in films (no falling to the floor clutching left arm) and it didn’t cross my mind that this could be serious. We had organised a party the day before and I put it down to heart burn. I feel pretty damn foolish about this now.

Thing is, it didn’t occur to [

Pretty flippin’ amazin’ as far as I am concerned and an inspiration to me since 1958. Especially fortuitous for this posting as that is where she met my Dad. That’s all I want to say about that.

The average young American now spends practically every waking minute — except for the time in school — using a smart phone, computer, television or other electronic device, according to a new study from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Put the lunch police back in their box

“Blundering interventions into family life, like lunchbox inspections, undermine this special bond. Suddenly, even from an early age, children are told that parents are not the best people to protect their interests; apparently that job should fall to the state instead. When a child is given a letter to take home from school for having brought in the wrong food – or even sent home themselves in disgrace – that child is being told that mum and dad are an embarrassing failure. Schools, which should be concentrating on providing a stimulating education, are forced into battle with parents over [

Have you seen the size of many teachers and school admin staff? Have you seen the cakes, chips and kebabs taken to staff-rooms at lunchtime? The tins of Quality Street and boxes of Roses in the school office.

At every school function school-raffles mean head-teachers hand bottles of wine and scotch to staff and parents and boxes of chocolates are everywhere in front of the same kids humiliated in every lunchtime stop & search.
